Solving Historical Elementary Mathematics Problems #4

Sorry that I didn't give you all more questions to solve. I was not in Singapore the last few days.

For the last question, most of you get the correct answer which is 875ml. I like the method which most of you used to solve which was "working backwards".

Now for the next question......(more challenging)

A group of gardeners went to cut the grass of 2 plots of land. The larger plot of land was twice the area of the smaller plot. After working on the bigger plot of land for half a day, one half of the gardeners went to work in the smaller plot of land. The rest stayed on the bigger plot and finished cutting the grass in the evening. However, by evening, an area of grass remained uncut in the smaller plot of land. One gardener then took one day to complete the job of cutting the area of uncut grass in the smaller plot of land

How many gardeners were there?

Solving Historical Elementary Mathematics Problems #3

Poet Li Bai’s jug contained some wine. Every time he passed by a wine shop, he would top up the wine in the jug so that the amount was doubled. When he passed by beautiful flowers, he would drink 1 litre of wine from the jug. Along the way, he passed by wine shops and beautiful flowers three times alternatively and finished all the wine in the jug.
What was the amount of wine originally in Li Bai’s jug?

Solving Historical Elementary Mathematics Problems #1

Hi children of 5 Diligence,
I hope you have enjoyed your holidays so far. To make you think and exercise your brain this holiday, I have decided to post a series of Historical Elementary Mathematics Problems here. I will post a new question every 2-4 days and the answer will also be shown with the next question. Please show your explanation or working clearly when you post your comment and remember to identify who you are.
You can inform your classmates to take part in the discussion if they are not aware of it yet.
So here we go......

Question #1
Multiply a number by 5. From the answer, subtract one-third of the answer, then divide by 10. Thereafter, add one-half, one-third and one-quarter of the original number in this order to get 68.
What is the number?
